EDF Renewables inaugurates the Mailhac-sur-Benaize solar power plant in Haute-Vienne

Mailhac-sur-Benaize, October 31, 2023 – Located in the town of Mailhac-sur-Benaize, the plant with an installed capacity of 4.9 MWp is made up of approximately 8,850 photovoltaic panels. It produces the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of around 2,700 people. This is the second solar power plant inaugurated in Haute-Vienne in 2023 by EDF Renewables.

In 2016, following a call for expressions of interest, the municipality of Mailhac-sur-Benaize entrusted EDF Renewables with the development of a solar power plant on this former uranium mine previously operated by Orano. Following the phases of studies, consultation, instruction and public inquiry, EDF Renewables obtained the building permit in 2020. The same year the project was the winner of a call for tenders from the CRE for an electricity purchase price over 20 years. After a year of work, the solar power plant was commissioned and is now injecting its production into the public electricity network.

With the installation of the power plant, the region will be able to count on new economic and fiscal benefits. Local companies were also mobilized, such as Socotec in Limoges or ENCIS Environnement in charge of environmental monitoring. From its branch in Limoges, the company Luxel, a subsidiary of EDF Renewables, will ensure the operation and maintenance of the plant.

From its design, the plant integrates environmental issues. On the one hand by offering a second life to an old uranium mine in order to produce low-carbon energy, for the benefit of the energy transition. Furthermore, from the start of the project, extensive ecological studies were carried out to determine and avoid areas or species requiring particular attention: the northern part of the site was thus avoided to preserve the habitat of the fauna present.

EDF Renewables already operates 17 solar power plants and 7 wind farms in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, for a cumulative power of around 213 MW. Other renewable energy projects are currently under development, notably in Haute-Vienne, with the Theil solar power plant, construction of which is scheduled to begin in 2024.

Mathias Armand, Limousin Regional Manager of EDF Renewables, said :

We are very proud to inaugurate the Mailhac-sur-Benaize photovoltaic power plant. This constitutes an additional brick in the development of renewable energies in Haute-Vienne, essential to meet the growing electricity needs. During its period of operation, it will also constitute a source of economic benefits for its territory through the rents and tax revenues which will be returned to it.”

It will provide the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 4,500 people in renewable energy, or 14% of the population of the commune of Port, for the benefit of the island's energy transition.

With a capacity of 4.6 MWp, the solar power plant is located on municipal land in the economic and industrial activity zone called “ZAC ECOPARC Le Port”. Winner of the call for tenders from the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) in 2020, this project was able to succeed thanks to the support of the Port Municipality and the Urban Community of the West Coast Territory ( TCO). As part of the communities' energy transition policy, it contributes more broadly to the island's objective of energy autonomy and its decarbonization.

As part of this project, EDF Renewables undertook to clean up the site: nearly 2 tonnes of batteries and 1,100 tonnes of waste were collected and then sent to appropriate reprocessing channels.

Nearly 2 million euros of works contracts were awarded to local companies, making it possible to promote the skills of the region. Upkeep and maintenance of the plant will also be carried out by a Reunion company during the 20 years of operation.

The EDF Renewables teams, accompanied by expert offices and local environmental associations, carried out sustained and tailor-made work in order to significantly improve biodiversity on the site where the solar power plant is located. The site was initially covered by ruderal vegetation characterized by the presence of invasive exotic species, with numerous waste having accumulated there for several dozen
of years. Ultimately, the environmental measures will make it possible to restore the biodiversity of the site, in favor of heritage flora and avifauna. Local palm trees and shrubs will be planted and different species of birds will be able to find a new, more suitable habitat.

Sofiane Boukebbous, South-East and Overseas Area Director of EDF Renewables, said : “We are proud to inaugurate the Rivière des Galets solar power plant today and would like to thank the communities for their support throughout the project. EDF Renewables continues its development in Reunion: the Rivière des Galets power plant brings to three the number of ground-mounted solar power plants operated by EDF Renewables. In Sainte-Rose, on the other side of the island, we are also carrying out the renewal of a wind farm. These projects are in line with our objective of supporting territories in their energy transition, in particular non-interconnected areas which have adopted ambitious objectives.”

Olivier Hoarau, Mayor of the Port, said : “I am happy to see this solar power plant now operational. Le Port being one of the sunniest towns on the island, the Rivière des Galets site is the ideal location for this type of installation. We are proud to have initiated this virtuous project in several respects: it meets our ambitious energy transition objectives, gives a second life to this site, and mobilizes local companies, including for the next 20 years of operation. »

Toul-Rosières photovoltaic power plant: 10 years of low-carbon electricity production serving the region

Paris, October 9, 2023 – EDF Renewables celebrates the 10thth anniversary of the Toul-Rosières photovoltaic power plant. Made up of around 1.4 million solar panels and an installed capacity of 115 MWp, this park is the most powerful operated by EDF Renewables in France.

Located on the former NATO air base 136, in Meurthe-et Moselle, this plant produces low-carbon electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of 55,000 inhabitants (heating included). Made up of 1.4 million photovoltaic panels, the plant occupies a total area of 367 hectares.

This former air base, built in 1952, placed under NATO and then French command after 1967, was closed definitively in 2004. The site has undergone numerous developments to support its reconversion. During technical studies, environmental diagnostics showed a significant level of soil pollution in certain locations. As a result, 8,000 tonnes of soil were evacuated to an approved treatment center. 280 military buildings and constructions, including 170 containing asbestos, were deconstructed. The construction phase, between June 2011 and May 2012, mobilized up to 700 people on the site. Half of them were recruited locally.

EDF Renewables has endeavored to take into account all the environmental issues of the site, as with all its projects. Wooded islands have been preserved inside the power station to create biological corridors and allow the movement of wildlife. Sensitive environmental areas and those hosting natural habitats have not been covered with solar panels in order to preserve their role for biodiversity. Honey plants were introduced to encourage the development of bees. Likewise, specific roosts and nest boxes have been installed to rehouse bats and birds present in disused buildings. All these measures have made it possible to maintain the presence of species on the site for 10 years.

Carlotta Gentile-Latino, Director of Land Activities France at EDF Renewables, said : " We are proud and happy to be able to support the region for 10 years in its energy transition. The Toul-Rosières photovoltaic power plant fully participates in the carbon neutrality objective set for 2050 by the Government. Proof of its good operational performance, the plant produced approximately 3% more low-carbon electricity than initially planned.
