The EDF group has acquired a 50% stake in the Codling offshore wind farm project in Ireland from Hazel Shore. Its subsidiary EDF Renewables, dedicated to wind and solar energy throughout the world, is now a partner of Fred Olsen Renewables Ltd to develop and build this project, of which it holds the remaining 50%.
The Codling project is located south of Dublin, 13 km off the coast of County Wicklow and thus benefits from favorable wind conditions off the east coast of Ireland. The project, whose development began in 2003, is spread over two sites, and one of them, Codling 1, benefits from a construction-operation authorization. As an indication, the project capacity should approach 1 GW installed.
This acquisition comes as the Irish government has just announced its commitment to reducing its carbon emissions. Indeed, in July 2019 it adopted a Climate Action Plan which specifies, in particular, that renewable energies must represent 70 % of the country's electricity production by 2030 and offshore wind must reach at least 3.5 GW of installed capacity. Over the next two years, the development of the Codling project will continue so that it contributes significantly to the achievement of the Irish government's objectives.
The EDF group is a significant player in offshore wind power internationally. Its subsidiary EDF Renewables has a portfolio of more than 6 GW of offshore wind projects in operation, under construction or in development in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany, China and the United States.
Bruno Bensasson, Executive Director of the EDF Group in charge of the Renewable Energy Sector and Chairman and CEO of EDF Renewables, declared: “EDF Renewables is very pleased to join the Codling offshore wind project in partnership with Fred Olsen Renewables. We will thus contribute to the Irish government's objectives in terms of developing renewable energies. This important project reinforces our ambition to be a leading global player in the offshore wind industry. It is fully in line with the CAP 2030 strategy which aims to double EDF's production of renewable energies. by 2030 by increasing it to 50 GW net”.
