The EDF group commissions its first renewable energy installation in the United Arab Emirates

On Monday, April 30, 2018, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Director General of DEWA, His Excellency Dr Sultan Al Jaber , Minister of State, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Masdar, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, and Managing Director of ADNOC, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Managing Director of Masdar, and Jean-Bernard Lévy, Chairman and CEO of EDF Group, in the presence of His Excellency Ludovic Pouille, Ambassador of France, and Bruno Bensasson, Group Executive Director in charge of the Renewable Energy Sector, inaugurated 200 MW of photovoltaic capacity in the Emirate of Dubai.

The installation constitutes the first phase of an 800 MW set, called “Dewa III” for which EDF has partnered with Masdar and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). “DEWA III” constitutes Phase 3 of one of the most powerful solar park projects in the world – the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Park. Representing a total investment of US$14 billion (AED50 billion), this park will have a total installed capacity of 5,000 MW, creating more than 1,000 jobs during its development and avoiding up to 6.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. per year, once fully operational in 2030. The DEWA III project had been awarded at a very competitive rate of 2.99 US cents per kilowatt hour for solar electricity generation. The 200 MW currently installed will be followed by two successive commissionings of 300 MW, in 2019 then in 2020. The installation will thus make it possible to supply electricity to the “Dubai 2020” universal exhibition, in accordance with the “Dubai clean energy” strategy. 2050”, aiming to increase the share of clean energy in Dubai to 75% by 2050.

Jean-Bernard Lévy, Chairman and CEO of EDF, declared: “It is a great honor for the EDF group to contribute to the energy transition of the Emirate of Dubai. I am pleased with the relationship of trust that has been forged with our partners Masdar and DEWA to develop carbon-free energies in the region and beyond. Dewa III illustrates the EDF group's capacity to carry out large-scale solar projects, and contributes to the Group's CAP 2030 strategic ambitions: doubling its renewable capacities and tripling its international activity outside Europe by 2030.

Bruno Bensasson, Group Executive Director in charge of the Renewable Energy Sector, declared: “We are proud to inaugurate the first phase of our large-scale DEWA III solar project totaling 800 MW, in this strategic region for the EDF Group. This new achievement, delivered in accordance with a demanding schedule, demonstrates the know-how of our teams in the development of large solar power plants.”
