Le Verdon-sur-Mer, March 20, 2023 – The Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux and EDF Renewables sign an agreement for the installation of a photovoltaic power plant at the Verdon-sur-Mer port terminal in Gironde. With a maximum capacity of 52 MWp, this future renewable energy production facility will contribute to the development of a former oil storage area. This project, which illustrates the essential role of Bordeaux Port and EDF Renewables in the territory's energy transition, will contribute to achieving the French government's objectives of carbon neutrality by 2050 with more than 100 GWp of installed solar capacity.
The Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux (GPMB) is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, alongside the economic players present on its sites. The transition to a renewable and carbon-neutral model, a real change on a territorial scale and an opportunity for reindustrialization, constitutes the heart of its strategy.
In this context, a call for expressions of interest (AMI) was launched in October 2021 for the development, construction and operation of a photovoltaic power plant on already artificialized land of 45 hectares in Verdon-sur-Mer. Following a competitive process, EDF Renewables was named the winner and is launching development of the project this March.
Construction will begin after a phase of technical and environmental studies and consultation with all stakeholders in the area. The electricity produced by the plant can be used in a short circuit, with manufacturers located on one of the seven terminals of the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux for self-consumption, via resale contracts (“Corporate PPA”), or through the mechanism of State call for tenders. This project increases the presence of EDF Renewables in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, which currently operates 17 solar power plants for a cumulative power of around 200 MWp, including 4 in Gironde, as well as 7 onshore wind farms for a power of 91 MW.
Jean-Frédéric Laurent, General Director of GPMB, said : “This project constitutes a key step, and a first brick for the low-carbon reindustrialization of the port. Bordeaux Port is now positioned as a major player in the production and supply of energy, particularly electricity, serving the region's industrial, port and logistics activities. This commitment alongside EDF Renewables illustrates our ability to act very concretely, in our port areas, for the ecological and energy transition.”
Didier Hellstern, Director of Development EDF Renewables, added : “We are proud to have been designated by our partners for this solar project, which demonstrates our expertise to support the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux and the industrial players in the area in their decarbonization approach. By promoting a former fuel storage site for the production of renewable electricity, this project constitutes a strong symbol for the territory's energy transition, and is in line with the EDF group's Solar Plan aimed at becoming a leader in market in France by 2035”.
