The Moroccan Sustainable Energy Agency (MASEN) has chosen, following a competitive international call for tenders,he consortium bringing together the EDF group (via its subsidiary EDF Renouvelables), Masdar (new energy company from the emirate of Abu Dhabi) and Green of Africa (Moroccan renewable energy developer), to ensure the design, construction and the operation and maintenance of the first phase of the Noor Midelt multi-technology solar complex.
This hybrid solar project with an installed capacity of 800 MW, innovatively combines two technologies: concentrated solar energy[1] (CSP) and photovoltaic solar. The method of hybridization of these technologies constitutes a world first.
By combining photovoltaic and CSP technologies in the same installation, the proposed plant will have improved efficiency and storage capacity which will allow it to produce electricity at a competitive price all day and up to five hours after sunset.
The project is located 20 km north of the town of Midelt in central Morocco, in the high plains overlooking the Moulouya River, at the junction of the Middle and High Atlas massifs. The construction phase is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2019; commissioning would then take place in 2022.
“EDF Renewables, Masdar and Green of Africa would like to thank the Moroccan Sustainable Energy Agency and the Kingdom of Morocco who chose them for the development of the innovative hybrid power plant combining concentrated solar and photovoltaic energy, with an installed capacity of 800 MW, on the Noor Midelt site. The consortium will provide its full support to MASEN and the achievement of Morocco's long-term ambitions in the field of renewable energies. », indicate the members of the consortium.
The Noor Midelt project represents a major step towards the Kingdom of Morocco's objective of producing 52% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
1 Thermodynamic solar power or CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) refers to all the techniques aimed at transforming the energy of solar radiation into heat to convert it into electrical energy, by means of a thermodynamic engine cycle coupled to an electric generator (a turbine). and a generator, for example) – ADEME.
