RATP and EDF sign their first renewable electricity contract

RATP and EDF have signed their first renewable electricity sales contract (Power Purchase Agreement PPA) for a period of three years. EDF has been supplying RATP with the production of 5 existing wind farms for the supply of green energy since January 2021.

The EDF group undertakes through this contract to provide RATP with the electricity production of five wind farms in France, owned and operated by its subsidiary EDF Renewables. The parks concerned are Freyssenet Saint Martin des Besaces (Calvados), Oupia (Hérault), Vanault (Marne), Longue Epine and Fonds de Fresne (Somme).

Over the three years of the contract, EDF will supply 170 GWh of renewable electricity to RATP (nearly 51 GWh in 2021; then 60 GWh in 2022 and 2023) out of an annual volume of 1.5 TWh sold to the public transport group. , or nearly 4 % of its consumption, the equivalent of the consumption of the 7 tram lines that RATP operates. Supply is ensured by and under the control of AGREGIO, the subsidiary of the EDF group specializing in the optimization of renewable energy production.

This contract demonstrates the RATP group's desire to carry out concrete actions to reduce its CO2 emissions, with the ambition of expanding the share of renewable energies to 10 % of its overall electricity consumption of here 2025. It also makes it possible to secure the price of the renewable electricity that the company consumes.

Developing the use of low-carbon energies is one of the RATP group's priorities. For example, RATP already uses biogas to power its buses in Ile-deFrance. By 2025, the RATP group will have a more ecological fleet in Île-de-France, including 1,500 electric buses and 2,200 renewable gas buses, allowing it to reduce its carbon footprint by 50%.

For EDF, which is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, the challenge is to support companies wishing to engage in the energy transition, one of the pillars of its raison d'être. Through this contract, EDF promotes the maintenance of low-carbon energy sources, by extending the operating life of its wind turbine installations after exiting the purchase obligation. A leading player in renewable energies, the Group contributes to their development in accordance with the objectives of the Government which wishes to increase their share in the French electricity mix to 40% in 2030.

Sophie Mazoué, responsible for sustainable development at RATP: “The RATP group has long been committed to reducing the carbon footprint of its activities. The implementation of this first renewable electricity sales contract concretely illustrates the RATP group's commitment to the ecological transition and carbon neutrality. Our ambition is that by 2025, 10% of our annual consumption will be produced from green electricity. »

Nelly Recrosio, Major Accounts Director of EDF: “Integrated into the supply of electricity, this PPA contract marks a new stage in our partnership with RATP, which we support in terms of economic performance and its energy transition. In France, 98 % of our production do not emit CO2(1), our production mix includes more than 20% of renewable origin. This PPA realizes the RATP Group’s low-carbon ambitions. »

(1) Direct emissions, excluding life cycle analysis (LCA) of means of production and fuels. Scope: EDF – production and marketing activities in France. Data as of 12/31/2019.
