EDF Renewables signs two power purchase contracts for a 128 MWac solar project with storage in California

EDF Renewables today announced the signing of two 20-year power purchase contracts for the Big Beau Solar+Storage project, located in California, in Kern County. With a capacity of 128 MWac*, the installation is coupled with 40 MW (160 MWh) of battery storage. 55 % of the facility's electrical output will be sold to Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) and 45 % to Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP), two local electricity providers.
The commissioning of the future installation should take place by the end of 2021. The project contributes to the EDF Group's Electricity Storage Plan which aims to develop 10 GW of additional storage capacity worldwide by 2035.

In September 2017, electricity providers SVCE and MBCP launched a joint tender to take advantage of economies of scale across a four-county territory.
This unprecedented collaboration between two local electrical authorities operating on the “CCA” model (for “Community Choice Aggregators”) has made it possible to generate synergies for the purchase of clean electricity at the best value for money.

“EDF Renewables is delighted to have been chosen by SVCE and MBCP, two innovative electricity suppliers, to supply their customers with green, affordable energy produced in the State of California.
The integration of a battery storage system offers the possibility of providing clean and partially redistributable 100% electricity, making it possible to better manage the impact of variations in consumption and production and to take advantage of fluctuations in the price of energy ", said Valérie Barros, Director of Renewable Energy and Storage Product Development for EDF Renewables in North America.

At full capacity, the facility will generate enough electricity to cover the electricity needs of 64,000 average California homes, avoiding the release of more than 315,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, the equivalent of pollution generated by 67,000 cars in one year.

EDF Renewables is among the leading producers of renewable energy in North America with 10 GW of capacity in wind, solar and electricity storage projects developed across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

*The contracts relate specifically to installed power expressed in MWac, a unit of measurement for alternating current.
