Paris, July 23, 2020: EDF Renewables announces two significant advances in wind power in Chile. The first concerns the extension of the Cabo Leones I park by 60 MW, in northern Chile. The second concerns the allocation of a land concession with a potential of 300 MW. These future developments are part of the EDF Group's CAP 2030 strategy aimed at doubling its installed renewable capacities worldwide, bringing them to 50 GW net, between 2015 and 2030.
EDF Renewables in Chile and its Spanish partner Grupo Ibereólica Renovables have just obtained a financing agreement for the extension of their Cabo Leones I wind farm, located in the Atacama region in Chile.
In service since 2018, Cabo Leones I will welcome 12 new wind turbines increasing the initial installed power of the park by 60 MW, which will thus reach 175.5 MW. By the end of 2021, the installation will cover the equivalent of the annual electricity needs of 163,000 homes in Chile.
At the same time and as part of government auctions, EDF Renewables won a 40-year concession for land located in the province of Antofagasta in northern Chile. This site of more than 2,600 hectares represents a wind potential of around 300 MW which could supply electricity to part of the mining activity, which is dense in this region of the world's leading producer of copper. Chile has committed to producing 100% of renewable energy by 2040 and is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.
Today, EDF Renewables operates 375 MW of gross renewable capacity in the country. In addition to the Cabo Leones I wind farm, the company operates two large-scale solar power plants, Bolero (146 MWp) and Santiago Solar (115 MWp). Jean-Christophe Puech, Director of EDF Renewables Chile, declared: “We are proud to continue our development in Chile through new wind projects. EDF Renewables thus confirms its commitment to supporting the country in the energy transition towards a carbon-free model. »
