EDF Renewables in North America announced today that the Morris Ridge photovoltaic project with an installed capacity of 212 MWp / 170 MWac[1], was awarded a long-term contract by the public interest company NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Branch) as part of the "Renewable Energy Standard Solicitation" of 2018.
The future solar power plant, which will span nearly 400 hectares south of the town of Mount Morris in Livingston County, is expected to produce clean electricity by the end of 2022.
This project participates in EDF's CAP 2030 strategy aimed at doubling its renewable capacities operated worldwide, beyond 50 GW net, between 2015 and 2030.
Stéphane Desdunes, Director of Development for EDF Renewables in North America, declared: “Our team is delighted to have been awarded the 170 MWac Morris Ridge solar project. It contributes to New York State's goal of achieving a 70 % share of renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030. The region, including the city of Mount Morris and Livingston County, will benefit from procurement and employment opportunities throughout the development, construction and operation phases with more than 200 jobs at peak construction, as well as millions of dollars in contributions that will be returned to the county, city and neighborhood schools during the project operation period. »
EDF Renewables will continue its collaboration with the city of Mount Morris as part of the project.
City of Mount Morris Mayor Charles DiPasquale added: “The City Council welcomes the contract with NYSERDA which makes the project and its assets a reality for the city and surrounding communities. »
“Congratulations to EDF Renewables for its successful participation in this consultation which constitutes a concrete contribution to achieving the objectives of the State of New York, leader in the United States in terms of clean energy, within the framework of Green New Deal, introduced by Governor Cuomo », said Doreen Harris, Director of Large Renewable Projects at NYSERDA. “NYSERDA worked closely with EDF Renewables and the Town of Mount Morris to make local community engagement and responsible siting a priority, enabling the project to ensure the proper management of our precious resources natural, while benefiting the local economy, the State and its workers.
Electricity generated at full capacity will meet the annual energy needs of approximately 39,000 homes in New York State[2]. This is equivalent to avoiding more than 140,000 tonnes of annual CO₂ emissions, or the greenhouse gas emissions of 30,000 cars over one year.[3].
EDF Renewables is among the leading producers of renewable energy in North America with 15 GW gross of wind, solar and storage projects deployed across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
[1] The contracts relate to installed power expressed in MWac, a unit of measurement for alternating current.
[2] According to calculations from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) in the United States, on the sale of residential electricity in 2017 and census data in the United States.
[3] According to calculations relating to greenhouse gas equivalences, carried out by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
