Paris, December 2, 2020 – EDF Renewables, a leading player in wind and solar energy in France, announces the commissioning of Toucan 2, a photovoltaic power plant with a capacity of 5 MW equipped with an intelligent storage system. This new power plant is part of the territory's Energy Transition and meets Guyana's objective of achieving energy autonomy by 2030. The installation also contributes to EDF's Solar Plan which aims to be one of the main players in solar energy in France, with 30% market share by 2035.
Located in the Guyanese commune of Montsinéry-Tonnégrande, the Toucan 2 photovoltaic power plant benefits from abundant sunshine over an area of nearly 5 hectares.
It is equipped with an intelligent storage system which, coupled with an efficient digital control device, makes it possible to permanently optimize the power transmitted by the photovoltaic panels on the electrical network in order to increase the supply of electricity in the evening, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., when demand is high. This optimized management contributes more generally to the stability of the Guyanese electricity network.
The device was developed by EDF Store & Forecast, the EDF group subsidiary dedicated to storage.
The new Toucan 2 power plant complements the Toucan 1 solar power plant with storage developed, built and operated by EDF Renewables since 2015. The two installations offer a cumulative power of 10 MW, making it possible to generate energy to meet the electricity needs of nearly 3,600 Guyanese households.
EDF currently has eight solar installations in operation in Guyana, three of which
equipped with a battery storage system, for a total cumulative power of almost
of 20 MW.
For David Augeix, France South and Overseas Director of EDF Renewables: “The Toucan 2 photovoltaic power plant responds to the energy transition challenges of an unconnected island-type territory, by providing carbon-free energy coupled with an efficient storage system to bring stability to the network. EDF Renewables is therefore proud to support Guyana in the long term in its ambition for energy autonomy by 2030 by offering innovative and competitive solutions. ".
