EDF Renewables commissions the Timna solar power plant in Israel

Paris, June 8, 2021 – EDF Renewables announces the commissioning of the Timna solar power plant with an installed capacity of 60 MW, in the Arava Valley in Israel. This approach is part of the EDF group's CAP 2030 strategy, aiming to double its net renewable energy production capacity from 28 to 60 GW from 2015 to 2030. It also contributes to the Israeli government's objective of increasing the part of solar energy in the energy mix to 30 % by 2030.

Located near the thousand-year-old copper mines of Timna, at the southern end of the country, this plant with 60 MW of installed capacity is one of the most powerful in the country. Its 154,000 photovoltaic panels use on a large scale, for the first time in Israel, high-performance bifacial technology which optimizes energy production.

The Timna project includes several initiatives aimed at protecting threatened indigenous animal and plant species, rehabilitating soils, controlling the runoff of rare rainwater in the region, as well as ensuring the project's landscape integration. This particular attention demonstrates EDF Renewables' strong commitments to preserving the environment.

In 2016, the company won the largest call for tenders organized to date in Israel, to operate this 100-hectare site over a period of 25 years.

Today, EDF Renewables operates 20 solar power plants across the country, with an aggregate power of nearly 390 MWp, and is building 14 projects there, including innovative floating solar power plants. The latter make it possible to take advantage of the large areas of water reservoirs across the country, and to limit evaporation.

Frédéric Belloy, International Director of EDF Renewables, declared: “The commissioning of the Timna solar power plant symbolizes the culmination of one of our most beautiful projects in Israel. With this new project, EDF Renewables consolidates its leading position in the Israeli energy market. We are happy to contribute to the development of renewable energies in the country, by providing our expertise and innovative solutions. ".
