EDF Renewables, SMET 71 and the City of Chagny are today inaugurating the Chagny photovoltaic power plant, with an installed capacity of 4.4 MW. This plant contributes to achieving the 69% renewable energy objectives of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region by 2030.
Located in Chagny, in Saône-et-Loire, the solar power plant is located on a former Technical Landfill Center (CET) belonging to the municipality and managed by the Joint Union for Studies and Waste Treatment, SMET 71. It covers 8.4 hectares and is made up of 8,370 photovoltaic panels. With an installed capacity of 4.4 MW, the low-carbon electricity it will produce each year will meet the electricity needs of 2,300 residents, or 40% of the population of Chagny.
Winner of a call for tenders from the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) in October 2020 and carried out in partnership with the municipality and SMET 71, the project constitutes a fine example of land revaluation, storage activities of waste which ended in 1999. It takes into account the environmental specificities of the site, and in particular the ground anchoring constraints linked to the need to maintain the integrity of the cover.
Launched in September 2021, the project involved around thirty people.
With this new commissioning, EDF Renewables operates 85 MW of solar energy in Burgundy-Franche-Comté and is currently building 8 additional solar power plants, for a total of around 71 MW.
Jennifer Menagé, Area Director of Development at EDF Renewables, declared: “ We are proud to inaugurate today, alongside elected officials and SMET 71, this solar power plant which provides low-carbon electricity production on a degraded site, unexploited for more than 20 years. This new production contributes to the implementation of the EDF group's Solar Plan, which aims to make the group a solar leader in France with 30% market share by 2035, as well as the French objectives of carbon neutrality in 2050. ".
Dominique Juillot, President of SMET 71, declares: “ Beyond land revaluation, this project attests to the virtuous policy implemented by SMET 71 in terms of energy recovery from waste. On its waste treatment facilities, SMET 71 already produces electricity and heat thanks to the cogeneration plant powered by biogas from the Chagny Storage Facility and biomethane from the organic matter produced. household waste thanks to the ECOCEA factory, which supplies the neighboring tile production factory. The Chagny solar power plant is a new step towards the energy mix deployed by SMET 71, which positions itself as a player in the energy and climate transition. »
