EDF Renewables commissions two solar power plants in New Aquitaine: Pardies – Os-Marsillon – Artix and Ambès

Paris, September 14, 2021 – The EDF group announces the commissioning of the Pardies – Os-Marsillon – Artix (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) and Ambès (Gironde) solar power plants. With a total installed capacity of 14 MW, these two plants, located on the land of former thermal power stations, contribute to EDF's Solar Plan, which aims to make the Group one of the main players in solar energy in France, with 30 % market share by 2035.

The solar power plant located in the municipalities of Pardies, Os-Marsillon and Artix (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) was built on the site of the former EDF thermal power plant; it covers 4.3 hectares and has 11,500 photovoltaic panels. With an installed capacity of 4 MW, it will produce each year the equivalent of the electricity consumption of around 2,000 inhabitants.

The Ambès solar power plant (Gironde), also located on the site of a former EDF thermal power plant, occupies an area of 10 hectares. The plant is made up of 25,000 photovoltaic panels, for an installed capacity of 10 MW. The renewable electricity it will produce will help meet the annual electricity needs of more than 5,000 residents.

The result of work carried out jointly with elected officials from the territories concerned, these two power plants developed by EDF Renewables contribute to the revaluation and reconversion of former industrial sites in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, while participating in the energy transition and to the economic development of the territory:

  • The construction of the two power plants, launched in 2020, mobilized more than 80 people for more than a year;
  • Two crowdfunding campaigns were organized to allow residents of Gironde, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and neighboring departments to invest in the projects. They were a great success and raised €400,000 in total;
  • The operation of these two power plants follows a sustainable approach. Vegetation maintenance on the Pardies – Os-Marsillon – Artix site will be ensured by mechanical mowing, without the use of phytosanitary products. A landscaped hedge has also been installed at the Ambès power station.

For Martin Leÿs, EDF Regional Action Director in New Aquitaine: “These two solar power plants in Ambès and Pardies, Os-Marsillon, Artix are the symbol of our commitment alongside the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region to accelerate the energy transition in the territories and build a CO2-neutral energy future.”

For Nicolas Couderc, France Director of EDF Renewables: “We are happy to contribute to the energy transition of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region with the commissioning of these two photovoltaic plants. These projects are exemplary, because they have made it possible to revalorize former industrial sites for the production of low-carbon electricity.”
