EDF Renewables launches construction of Poland's first large-capacity battery

EDF Renewables has officially launched construction of Poland's first high-power battery energy storage system (BESS). With a capacity of 50 MW, this facility will be located in the southwest of the country in the Opole region. It is scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2025.

This battery, directly connected to the electricity grid, will store and then release electricity according to the grid's needs. This installation is therefore a tool for flexibility and helps ensure the performance of the electrical system.

The first energy storage project of this scale in Poland, it paves the way for the development of this type of project in this region. Batteries will become a pillar of the country's energy security and transition, meeting the need to build a flexible, reliable, and sustainable electricity system as electricity generation sites diversify.

This first EDF Renewables Poland storage project will be followed by two others currently under development:

  • The first one is located in the town of Kobiernice, with a capacity of 120 MW.
  • The second one is located near the town of Turzyn, with a capacity of 200 MW.

Their commissioning is planned for mid-2027 and end of 2028 respectively.

With a portfolio of 1GW of production and storage projects and a presence in Poland for 14 years, EDF Renewables develops renewable energy sources, onshore wind, solar, battery storage and is positioning itself for future offshore wind projects.

Alicja Chilińska-Zawadzka, Director of EDF Renewables Poland, said: This large-scale storage project is our response to some of the most pressing challenges facing the energy transition in Poland.“.
