Paris, December 27, 2024 – Following the sixth offshore wind tender, the Ministry of Industry and Energy has selected “Eoliennes Méditerranée Grand Large,” the project company owned by EDF Renouvelables and Maple Power, to design, build, and operate the floating offshore wind farm known as “Golfe de Fos 1.”
The future Grand Large wind farm in the Mediterranean Sea will be located 25 km off the Mediterranean coast. With a capacity of approximately 250 MW, it is expected to supply the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of approximately 450,000 inhabitants.
This is the sixth offshore wind project won in France by EDF Renewables as part of calls for tenders launched by the State since 2011.
Leaders in offshore wind power in France, EDF Renewables and Maple Power and its shareholders, have developed and commissioned France's first offshore wind farm with a capacity of 480 MW, the Fécamp (500 MW) offshore wind farm, off the coast of Saint Nazaire, and are finalizing the commissioning of the Provence Grand Large floating wind farm pilot project (25 MW). They are building the Calvados offshore wind farm (450 MW) and developing the Dunkirk (600 MW) and Manche Normandie (1 GW) offshore wind farms.
The Méditerranée Grand Large project is part of the government's objectives, which aim to commission around fifty offshore wind farms by 2050, with a total capacity of 45 GW.
The Mediterranean Grand Large floating offshore wind farm team is committed to continuing the consultation work undertaken with local stakeholders (local authorities, businesses, fisheries committees, environmental protection associations, etc.) throughout the life of the project in order to ensure its proper integration, while respecting local issues.
Béatrice Buffon, Chairman and CEO of EDF Renewables, said: "We are delighted with this decision, which confirms the quality of the work carried out by the EDF Renewables and Maple Power teams. We are pleased to continue our collaboration with the region in support of the energy transition. The Grand Large Mediterranean offshore wind farm is fully in line with the EDF Group's strategy to develop low-carbon electricity production and contribute to France's carbon neutrality objectives by 2050. In addition, we will be able to capitalize on the feedback from the Provence Grand Large floating offshore wind farm, the first floating wind farm installed in France and the Mediterranean."
