Final stretch before the commissioning of France's first offshore wind farm off the coast of Saint Nazaire

Saint-Nazaire, September 22, 2022 – The Saint-Nazaire wind farm, co-owned by EDF Renewables and EIH S.à rl, a subsidiary of Enbridge Inc. and CPP Investments, received this Thursday, September 22, 2022, a visit from Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, of Christophe Béchu, Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, of Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister of Energy Transition, of Hervé Berville, Secretary of State for the Sea, and of Sarah El Haïry, Secretary of State in charge of Youth and Universal National Service.

A great opportunity to take stock of the progress of the construction site of the first offshore wind farm in France, which illustrates the realization of the French offshore wind industrial sector. The commissioning of this 480 MW park planned in end of 2022, is in line with the French government's ambitions to build 40 GW of offshore wind power by 2050.

After the installation of the first wind turbines in the Saint-Nazaire wind farm in mid-April, the 80 wind turbines, or the entire park, are now installed at sea. They should produce at the end of the year, the equivalent of 20% of consumption in electricity of Loire-Atlantique.

Since the launch of the project almost three years ago, the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm has kept its commitments in terms of employment. 2,300 jobs were mobilized in France, including 1,200 in the Pays de la Loire region. The sustainability of part of the jobs and the know-how developed is ensured in particular by the creation of factories in France: that of GE Renewable Energy for example for the assembly of nacelles and generators in Montoir-de-Bretagne, and the the Anemos Chantiers de l'Atlantique factory for the construction of offshore substations.

This project, won as part of a State call for tenders in 2012, contributed to the rise of a competitive French marine renewable energy sector. Thanks to the acquisition of new skills, the companies involved on the Saint-Nazaire wind farm site are now positioning themselves on other offshore wind projects in France, the rest of Europe and the world.

Once the project is completed, the operation and maintenance base of the park at La Turballe will employ around a hundred people directly during the 25 years of operation of the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm.

Bruno Bensasson, Executive Director of the EDF Group, in charge of renewable energies and Chairman and CEO of EDF Renouvelables, declared on behalf of the Saint Nazaire offshore wind farm consortium: “We are very proud to see the Saint Nazaire offshore wind farm enter its final commissioning phase. Fully operational by the end of the year, it will be the first offshore wind farm in France. This renewable electricity production facility would not have been possible without close cooperation with the State and all local stakeholders, elected officials, environmental associations, fishermen, economic stakeholders and local residents. Anchored in its territory, this park is fully in line with the Government's National Low-Carbon Strategy which aims for carbon neutrality from 2050, through sobriety and low-carbon, nuclear and renewable energies.
