Jérôme Pécresse, President and CEO of GE Renewable Energy, as well as Bruno Bensasson, Executive Director of the EDF group in charge of the Renewable Energy Sector, representing the consortium between EDF Renewable and Enbridge, today celebrated the exit from the factory of the first GE Renewable Energy nacelle, for the future Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm built by EDF Renewables – Enbridge.
This nacelle, which contains the generator, is the first in the Haliade 150-6 MW wind turbine series, intended for the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm, to be assembled by GE Renewable
Energy on its production site in Montoir-de-Bretagne.
This project, construction of which was launched a year ago, will consist of 80 wind turbines spaced one kilometer apart and located between 12 and 20 km from the coast. When it comes into service in 2022, it will produce the equivalent of 20% of the electricity consumption of Loire-Atlantique.
A new step in the structuring of the French offshore wind industrial sector, serving the economic dynamism of the Pays de la Loire and the influence of French know-how.
The Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm contributes to the dynamism of the region with a total of more than 1,000 local jobs created during the construction phase.
With this project, GE Renewable Energy, EDF Renewables and Enbridge are taking a new step in the development of the French industrial offshore wind sector. Following the award of three projects to the consortium led by EDF Renewables in 2012, GE Renewable Energy is the first player to have invested in wind turbine assembly plants on French territory. In France, more than 500 GE Renewable Energy employees will participate in the construction of this first French offshore wind farm, including 350 employees in the Montoir-de-Bretagne nacelle assembly plant but also in Nantes with the resources of the GE office (engineering, purchasing, quality, services) which currently employs more than 200 people. To these numbers, 200 job creations will be added when the Saint-Nazaire factory is at full capacity.
In parallel with the project carried out by GE Renewable Energy, earthworks to prepare the storage site and assembly of wind turbine components are being finalized in the port of Saint-Nazaire. The wind turbines will be stored there from 2021.
Offshore installation will begin in 2021 with the laying of foundations and interwind cables. Then the offshore electrical substation will be installed during the summer. In spring 2022, the first wind turbines can be installed and gradually put into service. The operation will last until the end of the year.
Continuing, the operation and maintenance phase of the park will begin for a period of 25 years. Around a hundred long-term jobs will be created for daily activities around the maintenance base located at the port of La Turballe. The agreement between EDF Renewables, Enbridge and GE Renewable Energy also covers a multi-year contract for services related to the maintenance of wind turbines.
“I am proud to celebrate today, alongside the local authorities, EDF Renewables and Enbridge our partners, and our employees, a new stage in the construction of the first French offshore wind farm in Saint-Nazaire. At GE Renewable Energy, we are happy to put our skills and know-how at the service of this historic project. With the production of these 80 Haliade 150-6MW wind turbines, we are strengthening our contribution to the consolidation of a French offshore wind industrial sector that is sustainable, competitive, exporting and creates jobs,” declared Jérôme Pécresse, President. & CEO of GE Renewable Energy.
Bruno Bensasson, Executive Director of the EDF group in charge of the Renewable Energy Division, on behalf of the EDF Renewables-Enbridge consortium, added: “We are very pleased to witness today the completion of the construction of the first offshore wind farm in France. , through the manufacturing of its first nacelle. This wind project off the coast of Saint Nazaire, which we have been supporting for several years, is above all that of a Region which contributes greatly to the creation of a new French industrial sector. More than 1000 inhabitants of Pays de la Loire will participate in its creation. This project constitutes a significant step forward for the development of renewable energies in France. ".
