Eolien Maritime France selects Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy to supply turbines for two French offshore wind projects

The company Eolien Maritime France (EMF), owned by EDF Renewables and the Canadian energy infrastructure company Enbridge, announces that the industrialist Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy will be responsible for supplying turbines to two of its three French offshore wind projects. This announcement follows the decision of GE Renewable Energy, until now the exclusive supplier, to ensure the delivery of wind turbines for only one of the French projects supported by EMF.

GE Renewable Energy will build the Haliade 150-6MW turbines for the first offshore wind project which will be launched as soon as its authorizations are cleared of appeal. The following two projects will be equipped with Siemens Gamesa turbines of similar dimensions, with the other characteristics of the projects being retained.

Already a partner of EDF Renewables for the Teesside offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom, as well as for the Provence Grand Large floating wind project in France, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy benefits from proven expertise in the field. Committed to the creation of a dedicated industrial sector in France, EMF has turned to this recognized player who will manufacture its wind turbines in the factory it plans to build in Le Havre.

The three offshore wind projects of Fécamp, Courseulles-sur-Mer and Saint-Nazaire, with a total cumulative capacity of 1,428 MW, were awarded to EMF in April 2012 by the French Government. Determinants for the development of the French industrial offshore wind sector, they are the result of broad consultation and field work carried out for more than 10 years by EDF Renewables and its partners, alongside local stakeholders, state services, industrialists, associations and local residents.

These projects also illustrate the large-scale contribution of renewable energies to the fight against climate change. They may be launched at the end of the legal procedures linked to the appeals filed against the authorizations obtained for the construction and operation of the parks. EMF expects these court decisions to be issued soon.

Calvados offshore wind farm

The project has a total power of 450 MW. Off the coast of Courseulles-sur-Mer, the wind turbines will be located more than 10 km from the coast of Bessin, over a total area of 50 km².
The planned production is equivalent to covering the equivalent of the domestic electricity consumption of nearly 630,000 people, or more than 90% of the inhabitants of Calvados.

Fécamp offshore wind farm

The project has a total power of 498 MW. The wind turbines will be located between 13 and 22 km off the coast of Fécamp, over a total area of 67 km².
The planned production is equivalent to covering the equivalent of the domestic electricity consumption of more than 770,000 people, or more than 60% of the inhabitants of Seine-Maritime.

Saint Nazaire offshore wind farm

The project has a total power of 480 MW. The wind turbines will be located between 12 and 20 km off the coast of Loire-Atlantique, over an overall surface area of 78 km², at depths varying between 12 and 25 m.
The planned production is equivalent to covering the equivalent of 20% of electricity consumption in Loire-Atlantique.
