The area covered by the lease presents a potential development capacity of 2,500 MW of wind power
EDF Renewables in North America and Shell New Energies US LLC (Shell) announced today that they had formed an equally co-owned joint venture (Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, LLC) for the development of the so-called OCS-0499 site, located in the area Wind Energy Company of New Jersey (WEA), under a lease issued by the United States federal authorities.
The area covered by the lease has an offshore wind energy production potential of around 2,500 MW, the equivalent of the annual energy consumption of nearly a million homes. This operation is subject to obtaining regulatory authorizations. Construction is subject to the final investment decision.
The site covered by the lease covers an area of 74,200 hectares. It is located nearly 13 kilometers off the coast of Atlantic City, on the outer continental shelf (OCS) of the United States. This area benefits from significant and regular wind resources in relatively shallow waters, located near large cities that consume a lot of electricity.
“Located off the east coast of the United States, this ambitious offshore wind project represents a considerable opportunity for EDF Renewables. This operation, in industrial partnership with Shell, should make it possible to take advantage of our expertise acquired in Europe on the offshore wind market, to deploy this activity in the United States, where we already benefited from a major foothold in onshore wind power. and solar. This project participates in the EDF Group's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to double its renewable capacities between 2015 and 2030 to reach 50 GW net worldwide. ", added Bruno Bensasson, Executive Director of the EDF Group's renewable division and Chairman and CEO, EDF Renewables.
“Shell has strong ambitions to develop its renewable energy activities, and sees solid potential for the development of the offshore wind market in the United States”, said Dorine Bosman, VP of Shell Wind Development. “Obtaining this New Jersey area complements our successful entry into Massachusetts, and our existing renewable energy production business. Leveraging both the strength of our brand and our global presence allows us to continue to provide our customers with cleaner and larger quantities of energy.”
EDF Renewables is already present in the offshore wind market through several projects with a cumulative capacity of 2.8 GW in development or operation across Europe – Germany, Belgium, France, United Kingdom – and has the ambition to contribute significantly to the development of the offshore wind sector in the United States, starting with New Jersey.
Shell entered the US onshore wind market in 2001. Shell has operated wind assets for decades, has a strong supply network and is one of the leading electricity wholesalers in North America. These strengths enable Shell to continue to strengthen its positions in renewable energy to support its renewable energy objectives.
Today, Shell has stakes in five onshore wind farms in North America and one in Europe. Shell is also part of a consortium, responsible for the construction and operation of Borssele 3&4 wind farms in Europe.
Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, LLC will first finalize the site assessment plan and then initiate the development process. Subject to a favorable decision regarding the final investment, the joint venture could commission the wind farms by mid-2020.

About Shell New Energies
Shell intends to make electricity a significant part of its business, from production, to the purchase, sale and supply of electricity directly to customers. Our New Energies business aims to exploit the Company's strengths in commercial and high-growth segments of the energy industry, such as offshore wind in the United States.
Shell has been active in onshore wind in the United States since 2001. Today, the Company has interests in five onshore wind projects in North America and one offshore wind farm in Europe, bringing our total production capacity , generated by these projects, to more than 400 MW. Shell also has a 20 % stake in the Blauwwind consortium, which will be responsible for the construction and operation of the Borssele 3 and 4 offshore wind farms in the Netherlands. The total installed capacity of these wind farms is 731.5 MW, able to power around 825,000 Dutch homes. Shell is a 50% shareholder in Mayflower Wind Energy LLC which is the provisional winner of block 0521 in Massachusetts, United States. Once built, the Massachusetts lease area could accommodate a total generating capacity of approximately 1.6 gigawatts (GW), enough to supply more than 680,000 homes with clean electricity each year.
