ArcelorMittal Méditerranée and EDF Energies Nouvelles inaugurate a photovoltaic power plant in Fos-sur-Mer (PACA)

EDF Energies Nouvelles and ArcelorMittal Méditerranée announce the commissioning in the Provence – Alpes – Côte d'Azur Region of the La Fossette photovoltaic power plant, with a capacity of 12 MWp.

The completion of this project is part of the EDF Group's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims in particular to double its renewable capacities by 2030. For ArcelorMittal Méditerranée, this involves facilitating the production of renewable energy by making available part of its industrial land.

La Fossette photovoltaic power plant 12 MWp

Located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, the La Fossette solar power plant was developed and built by EDF Energies Nouvelles, within the Fos-sur-Mer industrial-port complex, on ArcelorMittal land. The steelmaker, owner of 1,600 hectares, makes 15 hectares available to EDF Energies Nouvelles.

Equipped with more than 45,000 photovoltaic panels, the plant, which has a capacity of 12 MWp, produces the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 7,400 inhabitants, or half of the town of Fos-sur-Mer.

The project mobilized up to 40 people on site for 10 months.

With this project, EDF Energies Nouvelles is strengthening its presence in France in renewable energies. To date, the company operates nearly 1.5 GW of wind and solar power in France.

In 2016, ArcelorMittal recorded a turnover of $56.8 billion for crude steel production of 90.8 million tonnes, with its own iron ore production of 55.2 million tonnes.

In France, ArcelorMittal has 16,440 employees, including nearly 800 researchers, spread across its 40 production sites, its distribution and service centers and its four R&D sites.

ArcelorMittal produced 9.4 million tonnes of liquid steel in 2016 in France. France represents 30 % of ArcelorMittal's flat steel production in Europe.

ArcelorMittal Méditerranée, based in the south of France, combines traditional steelmaking know-how with the production of high-end steel, adapted to the challenges of the future. This alliance allows the sites' customers, and in particular those in the automotive sector, to meet the challenges they face today.

For more than forty years, the integrated Fos-sur-Mer site has produced a wide range of steel grades for automobiles, construction, household appliances, packaging, energy tubes (gas pipelines, oil pipelines), the wheels… The site today offers nearly 200 different grades with a production capacity of more than 4 million tonnes per year. Its location on the coast makes it one of the very leading French sites for steel production and distribution. The site is the second largest industrial employer in the department with more than 4,000 direct jobs.
