EDF Group commissions its largest wind farm in South America

The EDF group, through its subsidiary EDF Renouvelables, announces the commissioning of its largest wind farm in South America, the Serra do Seridó wind farm located in the state of Paraìba in the Northeast of Brazil. Composed of 85 wind turbines with an installed capacity of 480 MWc, this farm will produce the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of approximately 1.5 million Brazilian homes.

The commissioning of Serra do Seridó confirms the EDF group's long-term commitment to Brazil and illustrates its contribution to the country's energy transition thanks to its expertise in varied and complementary technologies.

The park has a tariff for part of the electricity produced, obtained during an auction organized by the Brazilian federal government in 2019. Another part of the electricity was sold through multi-year power purchase agreements (cPPA).

The construction of the park was carried out in two phases, the first of which began in 2021. The work involved nearly 2,000 people, including more than 30% of local jobs. In an ongoing effort to support local communities, EDF Renouvelables has carried out various socio-economic development initiatives, including training for farmers on the restoration of degraded rural areas, in partnership with the Paraibana State enterprise for land resource management.

The EDF Group has been present in Brazil for almost 30 years, with a total of more than 1.8 GW of solar and wind projects in the country, operating the Sinop hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 402 MW and the Norte Fluminense (827 MW) and Marlim Azul (565 MW) CCG plants. The Group recently won its first project in the electricity transmission sector and is also developing storage solutions.

Béatrice Buffon, Group Executive Director in charge of International Management and Chairman and CEO of EDF Renewables said : " The inauguration of the Serra do Seridó wind farm is an important milestone that demonstrates our continued commitment to a carbon-neutral future, also contributing to our customers’ decarbonisation strategy. By providing renewable energy, we contribute to the fight against climate change and promote socio-economic progress for the local communities around our facilities, a crucial issue to foster a just and sustainable energy transition. »
