In Saint-Romain-en-Gal, EDF Renewables and the Nicollin group commission the first ground-mounted solar power plant in the Rhône department

Lyon, September 30, 2022 – EDF Renewables and the Nicollin Group announce the commissioning of the Saint-Romain-en-Gal solar power plant. Located on a former non-hazardous waste storage facility belonging to the Nicollin Group, this solar power plant contributes to the redevelopment of the site and the region's energy transition.

With an installed capacity of 5 MWp and made up of 9,500 panels, the plant will produce enough low-carbon electricity each year to meet the needs of around 3,000 residents.

Located on a former non-hazardous waste storage facility in the locality Le Melay belonging to the Nicollin Group, the solar power plant has benefited throughout its development from the support of the municipality of Saint-Romain-en-Gal and the operator of the site. It is part of the “Positive Energy Territory” approach of the Vienne Condrieu Urban Community, in favor of local renewable energies.

In development since 2018, it is the first ground-based photovoltaic power plant commissioned in the Rhône department. Residents of the Vienne Condrieu Agglomeration community and the departments of Rhône and Isère participated in financing the construction of the power plant to the tune of €100,000, between October and December 2021.

In 2021, the Saint-Romain-en-Gal solar power plant obtained the “Positive Biodiversity” label created by the Syndicat Mixte des Rives du Rhône, bearer of the Territorial Coherence Scheme (SCOT). Indeed, a set of environmental measures have been planned to preserve biodiversity, such as the planting of a hedgerow to recreate an ecological corridor and thus promote the development of birds, insects and mammals.

Nicolas Couderc, France Director of EDF Renewables, said : " The redevelopment of the site through the installation of a solar power plant reconciles biodiversity issues and renewable energy production. We thank the local authorities, the Vienne Condrieu urban community and the Nicollin Group, operator of the site, for their support throughout the 4 years of development of this project. This plant demonstrates the commitment of EDF Renewables to develop, build and operate renewable energy projects that contribute to the energy transition and the fight against climate change. It also contributes to achieving the objectives of EDF's Solar Plan, which aims to make the Group a leader in solar energy in France by 2035. ".

Olivier Nicollin, CEO of the NICOLLIN Group, said : " Committed and active in the region since
For almost 75 years, we wanted to implement a meaningful and impactful project as part of the post-operation of the Saint-Romain-en-Gal site. It became obvious that the transformation of a former non-hazardous waste storage facility into a photovoltaic power plant, supported by citizens via a crowdfunding project and allowing the production of carbon-free electricity, would be a formidable vector for the ecological transition in the territorial service. Also, we are happy to have initiated the project of the 1st power plant
Ground photovoltaics in the Rhône department alongside EDF Renewables ".

Luc Thomas, Mayor of Saint-Romain-en-Gal, said : " I am delighted with the outcome of photovoltaic power plant project in Saint-Romain-en-Gal. It is thanks to this type of initiative virtuous that we will protect our landscape, our agriculture, our energy autonomy and our health to all! ".
