EDF wins a maritime zone in New York Bay to develop offshore wind power

EDF, via its subsidiary EDF Renewables, and Shell New Energies US LLC (Shell), equal partners in the consortium Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind LLC (Atlantic Shores), obtain development rights over a maritime area of 32,112 hectares in New York Bay, off Long Island and the coast of New Jersey. After completing the development phase, the consortium will be able to build and operate an offshore wind project with an estimated capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) for a duration of 33 years.

EDF and its partner thus won one of the six maritime zones proposed for the development of new offshore wind projects as part of an auction from February 23 to 25, 2022 organized for the federal state by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).

Obtaining this new concession opens additional prospects for Atlantic Shores. Indeed, the EDF – Shell consortium has already held a concession of 74,200 hectares off the coast of New Jersey since 2018. In 2021, it was named the winner to develop an offshore wind farm with a capacity of 1.5 GW, the equivalent of the annual consumption of around 700,000 homes. It is the largest offshore wind project in New Jersey and the third largest in the United States. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024.

With this second concession, Atlantic Shores consolidates its position among the main offshore wind developers in the United States. EDF becomes a leading player in contributing to the American objective of 30 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.

Present for 35 years in the United States, EDF Renewables is ranked 4e ranks in terms of renewable energy projects under construction and development[1] and currently produces renewable energy (onshore wind, solar and storage) in the country with a net capacity of over 3.7 GW.

Bruno Bensasson, Executive Director of the EDF Group's renewable division and Chairman and CEO of EDF Renewables, declares: “We are very proud that EDF, through the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind consortium, has won a new maritime zone in New York Bay to develop offshore wind power. This success reinforces the quality and competitiveness of our offer and I would like to salute the work carried out over several months by our teams, in partnership with Shell New Energies. EDF benefits from more than 10 years of recognized experience in the offshore wind sector in Europe and has gradually expanded its positions around the world, particularly in China and the United States.
This new concession will constitute a significant step forward in the EDF Group's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to double its installed renewable capacities worldwide between 2015 and 2030 to bring them to 60 GW net. ".
