The maintenance base of the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm, located in La Turballe, was inaugurated today in the presence of Mr. de La Laurencie, Project Director of the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm, Mr. Cadro, Mayor of La Turballe, Ms. Meignen, President of the Ports of Loire-Atlantique union, Mr. Nicolle, General Director of SAEM Loire-Atlantique Pêche et Plaisance, as well as Mr. Bergue, Sub-Prefect of Saint-Nazaire. As soon as the first wind turbines are installed in spring 2022, this eco-responsible building will accommodate the team of around a hundred people responsible for the operation and maintenance of the park.
A nerve center mobilizing around a hundred jobs
Located on the port of La Turballe, the base is located geographically close to the park. It is made up of a building and pontoons intended to accommodate 3 personnel transfer vessels (CTV).
When the operation of the 80 wind turbines is launched in 2022, this base will gradually become the center of offshore wind farm activity from land. The maintenance base team will ultimately be responsible for managing the operation and maintenance of the fleet on a daily basis. For optimal production, operations will take place 7 days a week depending on weather conditions.
The creation of around a hundred jobs with various skills is necessary to carry out the various missions: monitoring of access to the park, supervision of electrical production or even light preventive and corrective maintenance.[1]. Recruitment has already started for certain professions and will end in 2022. Operations manager and logistics manager, maintenance technician and logistics technician, bridge manager, quality inspector, driving manager as well as administrative functions, as many men and of women from the region will embark next year on the continuation of the adventure of 1er offshore wind farm in France.
To allow staff rotations between the base and the offshore wind farm, 3 personnel transfer vessels (CTV), currently being manufactured at the OCEA shipyard in Vendée for the company LD Tide, will be moored at the future EMR quay on pontoons. manufactured by the Nantes company ETPO.
The choices relating to the building, the pontoons and the parking lot were made in close collaboration with representatives of the port of La Turballe, port users, the Department and the municipality of La Turballe.
During the inauguration of the maintenance base Olivier de La Laurencie, Project Director of the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm of EDF Renewables on behalf of the consortium, declared: “ This stage, which is also part of the remarkable dynamic of growth of the port of La Turballe, marks further progress on the site towards the operationalization of the park. We are happy to see this new building inaugurated today. It is in the process of the “Positive energy / Minimum carbon” label and around a hundred people will work there during the 25 years of operation of the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm. »
An eco-responsible maintenance building
The building, with a footprint of 1,250 m² (including 751 m² of warehouse), was built to be functional and innovative. Designed following discreet and refined lines, it is part of an eco-responsible approach.
The CAN architectural firm was commissioned to work on the landscape integration of this building. This was designed taking into account a large number of parameters meeting the project owner's specifications:
- Low-carbon logic with sustainable and recyclable materials and thanks to the choice of local companies, making it possible to limit long-distance transport;
- Bioclimatic design of the building[2];
- Performance of the envelope notably reducing energy needs;
- Choice of interior materials to guarantee air quality.
The engineer-architect Margaux Pétillon in charge of the design of the building, present at the inauguration, explained: “ In addition to the sustainable and biosourced design which is the basis of our philosophy, this building takes advantage of its location facing the sea to offer its users an inspiring workplace while integrating into the maritime landscape. While remaining in a concern for sobriety, particular attention was paid to the promotion of bio-sourced construction materials in the building, they contribute to the interior atmosphere as well as to raising user awareness of these construction methods.. »
The companies Legendre Génie Civil, CCL Construction, Mabileau TP Shipelec and LB EcoHabitat in particular participated in the construction of this wood-framed building, insulated with hemp concrete and lime, with LED lighting and without air conditioning. It is equipped with solar panels providing 1,000 kWh/month since they were commissioned this summer.
Built on three levels, including a panoramic terrace, it also has a warehouse to store the parts necessary for the maintenance of the park. For the smooth running of operation and maintenance activities, the base is equipped with a control and telecommunications room, changing rooms and offices. The car park at the bottom of the Phaidra residence will allow staff to park their vehicles.
[1] In particular the repair of small parts. Heavy corrective maintenance operations will be carried out from other ports.

About the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm
The Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm is co-owned equally by EDF Renewables and EIH S.à rl (Enbridge Inc. and CPP Investments). This partnership is characterized by solid experience, proven through other projects carried out in renewable energies.
The Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm launched its construction in August 2019. Made up of 80 wind turbines and located between 12 and 20km from the coast, the park will produce the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 20% of Loire-Atlantique.
Its commissioning is planned for the end of 2022.
