Launch of the photovoltaic power plant project at Deauville-Normandy airport

Hervé MORIN, President of the Normandy Region, President of the Mixed Union of Deauville-Normandy Airport, Bruno BENSASSON, Executive Director of the EDF group in charge of the renewable energy division, Philippe AUGIER, President of the Community of Communes Cœur Côte Fleurie, Mayor of Deauville, Hubert Dejean de la Bâtie, Vice-President of the Normandy Region and Serge TOUGARD, Regional Advisor presented the photovoltaic power plant project on the grounds of the Deauville-Normandie airport, making Deauville-Normandie the first airport regional producer of renewable electricity in France and Europe.

EDF Renewables, winner of the call for expressions of interest (AMI), will contribute to the energy and economic development of land located within the grounds of Deauville-Normandie Airport, in perfect coexistence with the activity of the aerodrome.

Over an area of more than 45 hectares, EDF Renewables will benefit from a 30-year operating right to build a photovoltaic power plant with a power of more than 60 megawatts, which will produce a quantity of electricity greater than the annual consumption of all the inhabitants of the Community of Communes Cœur Côte Fleurie (21,000 inhabitants). In total, around 700,000 tonnes of CO2 (compared to the European mix) will be avoided during the entire operating period of the plant, making the Deauville-Normandie terminal a terminal with a negative carbon footprint. The commissioning of the solar power plant is expected, estimated, for the first half of 2024.

This solar project, the most powerful in Normandy, is in line with the objectives of the regional plan for planning, sustainable development and territorial equality in the Normandy Region (SRADDET). Thus abandoned airports will be allocated to the production of renewable energy.

The project will generate local benefits, starting from the development phase, with the launch of calls for tenders from local companies for the conduct of studies and for the construction phase (roads, installation of panels, electrical connection ). Interventions on site will be carried out in close collaboration with the airport and civil aviation services for scrupulous compliance with the safety standards and requirements inherent to this type of site.

Training may also be provided by dedicated regional centers. All the royalties offered by the rental of this land, coupled with an incentive on energy production, will generate revenue for the Mixed Syndicate. Local authorities as well as the Department and the Region will also receive tax revenue.

“The Mixed Union of Deauville – Normandy Airport, strongly supported by the Normandy Region, hopes to be, in the short term, the first French regional airport able to offer an offer adapted to the electric aviation of the future and also to future aerial hydrogen. The next terminal currently under construction will itself be very energy efficient. The Deauville terminal could thus be the first in Europe with a negative carbon footprint. » specifies Hervé Morin.

Bruno Bensasson, Executive Director of the EDF group in charge of the renewable energy division adds: “We are very proud to be the winner of this solar power plant at Deauville-Normandy airport and to support the Normandy Region in its local policy of deploying renewable energies in its territory. This success demonstrates EDF Renewables' ability to propose competitive and innovative projects on demanding and complex sites such as an active airport here, in close collaboration with local stakeholders and State services. It also marks progress in EDF's Solar Plan which aims to make the Group one of the leaders in solar with 30% market share by 2035."
