EDF, through its subsidiary EDF Renewables, and Shell New Energies US LLC (Shell), equal partners in the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind LLC (Atlantic Shores) consortium, won development rights for a 32,112-hectare offshore area in the New York Bight, between Long Island and the New Jersey coast. After completing the development phase, the consortium will be able to build and operate an offshore wind project with an estimated capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW)for a period of 33 years.

EDF and its partner won one of six proposed lease areas to host offshore wind projects in an auction held by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) from February 23 – 25, 2022.

Obtaining this new concession opens new opportunities for Atlantic Shores. The EDF – Shell consortium has already held a 74,200-hectare concession off the coast of New Jersey since 2018. In 2021, it won an award for an offshore wind project with a capacity of 1.5 GW, equivalent to the annual consumption of about 700,000 homes. It is the largest offshore wind project in New Jersey and the third largest in the United States. Construction is planned to begin in 2024.

With this second concession in the United States, Atlantic Shores consolidates its position as one of the country’s leading offshore wind developers. This makes EDF a key player in contributing to the U.S. goal of 30 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.

EDF Renewables has been present in the United States for 35 years and ranks 4th in terms of renewable energy projects under construction and development[1] and produces today more than 3,7 GW of net renewable energy (solar, onshore wind and storage) in the country.
