EDF power solutions wins its first battery project in Japan

In the frame of its second LTDA (Long Term Decarbonation Auction), the Japanese government awarded EDF power solutions with a 110MW battery project.

With a storage duration of 3 hours, this lithium-ion battery project is the first for EDF power solutions in Japan. The battery will be located near the city of Okayama in the southern part of the main island, and its commissioning is scheduled for 2029.

According to the terms of the tender, EDF power solutions commits to completing a full discharge and recharge cycle of the battery every day, thereby injecting 110 MW into the grid for three hours. This installation will provide flexibility to the Japanese power grid.

Japan is developing new storage capacities to support the rapid growth of renewable energies in its energy mix, while the country still depends on fossil fuels and aims at reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

With over 15 years of experience in battery projects, EDF power solutions operates more than 600 MW of battery and builds 1 GW worldwide. Highly involved in the US and South Africa markets, EDF power solutions develops grid-connected batteries or hybrid solutions combining solar or wind farms with batteries. The purpose of batteries is to enhance the performance and strength of power grids and smoothen the integration of new generation assets into the energy system.

Patrick Charignon, Asia-Pacific Executive VP at EDF power solutions said: « We are very proud to have won our first battery project in Japan. This success rewards the work of our teams and illustrates the expertise of EDF power solutions in storage technologies, an essential tool for supporting the decarbonization of electricity systems. »
