EDF Energies Nouvelles is announcing the commissioning of the Spinning Spur 2 wind farm (161 MW) in Texas by its US subsidiary EDF Renewable Energy. The company has expanded its presence in Texas and has more than one gigawatt in service yet or due to be built by 2015.
Spinning Spur 2 is located in 60 km west of Amarillo, Texas. This 161 MW wind farm consists of 87 wind turbines supplied by General Electric which will produce the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of around 44,000 US homes.
Following the completion of the plant, the condition precedent allows the closing of the sale of 50 percent EDF Renewable Energy equity interest in the project to UBS. This share handover is in compliance with the policy of financial partnerships initiated by EDF Energies Nouvelles in order to reinvest in new projects development.
With 12.3 GW in installed wind energy capacity, Texas offers both natural conditions favourable and a supportive political and economic environment. Following on from the Spinning Spur 1 (161 MW) and Bobcat Bluff (150 MW) wind farms that entered into service in December 2012, Spinning Spur 2 is the third project completed by EDF Energies Nouvelles in Texas. For now, the Group has achieved 472 MW in gross capacity in this US state on the portfolio of one gigawatt in service or due to be built by 2015.
