June full of events and emotion for the Calvados offshore wind farm, partner of several events and commemorative ceremonies planned in Normandy on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Landing.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the Calvados offshore wind farm retraced all its initiatives to bring the duty of memory to the public in a film entitled “Between memory and future”.
This film received the support of Ms. Dominique Kieffer (daughter of Commander Kieffer who created and commanded the 1st commando marine rifle battalion), Mr. Marcel Bastide (Mayor of Arromanches) and Mr. Stéphane Simonnet (historian).
This “field” presence therefore began on June 5 with a ceremony paying tribute to Commander Kieffer in Grandcamp-Maisy. The next day, June 6, the team, in the presence of Aymeric Ducrocq, Director of Marine Renewable Energies France at EDF Renewables, participated in the commemorations taking place at Sword Beach. Let us remember that on June 6, 1944, more than 155,000 men and nearly 6,000 ships were mobilized to liberate France and Europe from Nazi totalitarianism.
The Calvados offshore wind farm also supported various initiatives, exhibitions, or events throughout the Calvados territory, such as: an exhibition of three British Spitfires in Colleville-Montgomery and Lion-sur-Mer, the French ceremony -Canadian organized by the town hall of Courseulles-sur-Mer, the “Cap au sud” photography festival organized in Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer under the patronage of UNESCO, or the traditional ceremony of awarding the green berets to candidates who have successfully completed the commando course in the presence of the descendants of the Kieffer commando. Finally, at the end of June, the park will also be present during the inauguration of the completely renovated memorial site in Arromanches-les-Bains.
Remember that the park's commitment to the duty of memory materialized through the creation of the “History and duty of memory” working group. Led by the National Office for Veterans and War Victims (ONACVG) of Calvados and composed of representatives of the coastal communities of the Bessin coasts, historians, veterans' associations, representatives of museums and actors in the memory of the Second World War, this working group recorded the choice of naming the 64 wind turbines of the Calvados offshore wind farm with the ships that participated in the Landings and the Battle of Normandy in 1944.
This work will materialize by affixing plaques to each of the 64 wind turbine foundations.
