“The archipelago of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, an exceptional French territory in North America, has everything to meet the challenges of its energy transition, if important for its future. For this, the decarbonization of its energy production system is of major interest. Let's build together, with all of you, this new energy model, in the interest of your territory! »

Damien Laville, Overseas Project Director – EDF Renewables

The perception of the energy issues of the archipelago

To date, the archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is dependent on hydrocarbons for the production of its electricity via a single thermal production source.

Convinced that the energy transition of a territory cannot succeed without strong conviction and commitment from local stakeholders, EDF Renewables has set up a dialogue with the inhabitants of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon in order to understand the perceptions, questions and the population's expectations regarding renewable energies.

This first phase of citizen consultation took place between September and October 2023, with:

  • individual interviews carried out in the two municipalities of the archipelago (representative sample of the population);
  • workshops in a primary school in each of the communes of the archipelago;
  • a questionnaire aimed at the entire population.

This approach aims to continue discussions with the population around the development of renewable energies, adapted to the specificities of the territory.
